“The perfect retreat for farm holidays in Devon” – Jan Smith April 2012
Dunsdon National Nature Reserve is 168 acres of rare culm grassland habitat where over 70 bird species have been recorded. Breeding birds include grey heron (in a small heronry in the trees just south of the viewing platform), buzzard, sparrowhawk, skylark, song thrush, spotted flycatcher, willow tit, reed bunting, tree pipit, willow warbler, garden warbler and grasshopper warbler. Winter visitors include snipe, short-eared owl and woodcock. Barn Owls are spotted frequently flying the reserve and use the trees as roosting sites.
Barn Owl Watching in Devon
In addition to the opportunity to spot Barn Owls flying the reserve, we have Barns Owls nesting at the farm for the last six years and these can be viewed by our guests on our Owlcam monitors; situated in our five star holiday cottage and Quarry Pods.
In addition to the wonderful bird life the mammals present on the site include hedgehogs, fox, roe deer and badgers, and the thick hedge banks and scrubby areas also support dormice, feeding on hazel nuts and using honeysuckle as nesting material.

Farm and Wildlife Holidays in Devon
Dunsdon Farm is a historic Devon farm, mentioned in The Domesday Book and now managed for its wildlife and conservation benefit. In the last ten years we have managed to establish a new 23 acre native woodland plantation with wild flower open rides, paths and a wildlife pond, and also re-created 10 acres of wildflower rich meadows and 14 acres of restored culm meadows. The farm is fortunate to have nesting Barn Owls, amongst its many species of fauna.
We run weekly farm walks for guests staying at Dunsdon Farm, and all guests have free access to our woodland nature reserve and wildlife pond.
