Emma Rice’s ‘exquisite’ (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Theatre Royal Plymouth following its critically acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe.
As our destitute heroine struggles to survive, she strikes her matches to keep warm. Each match will conjure a new story, a new vision, and we will hold her hand as we tumble down the rabbit hole together. Inspired by the beautiful and devastatingly sad Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Match Girl, and combining Andersen’s other tales, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, The Little Matchgirl (and Other Happier Tales) reveals a spellbinding world of magic and mystery.
Steeped in the metaphor and meaning that runs through the veins of Andersen’s enduring stories, this will be a night to delight, transport and surprise. For adults and brave children alike, expect music, puppetry, dark magic… and perhaps some modern truths that we would all rather remain hidden.

It is an ill-omened day when Tatiana Dressler pulls a drowning cat from the surging waters of the River Schwartz.
Tatiana’s father, a struggling inventor, has designs on the unfortunate feline, naming the cat Count Frederick Sebastian and setting to work on an ingenious contraption to humanise the creature. The cat is of a murderous disposition, developing a taste for a neighbour’s prized canaries – but canary slaughter is not the only suspicious activity being investigated at the Dressler residence. Death-fixated Tatiana fears the worst is just around the corner.
Full of sinister secrets, improbable inventions and murderous mayhem, this blood-thirsty comedy comes from the author of the UK Theatre Award-winning Mister Holgado.
A play for adults but suitable for brave children aged 8+
